Curriculum Intent

At Blackwell Primary School, we believe that in mastering mathematics pupils should acquire a deep, long-term and secure understanding of the subject.  This will enable them to apply their knowledge in an adaptable way.  This includes the ‘real-life’ and practical application of mathematics in order that there is purpose to their learning.  This model allows the children to appreciate and understand the beauty and power of mathematics and the relevance of this subject to the world around them.

Teachers plan and deliver regular opportunities to develop pupils’ mathematical fluency, which allows them to take responsibility for their own progress and give them the courage and drive to improve.  Fluency in mathematics is essential, so that pupils can develop and improve their conceptual understanding in order to undertake problem-solving and reasoning, in a wide range of experiences.

“Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.”

Achievement Statements

All children are taught and assessed against the achievement statements. These can help you as a parent or carer to further understand what your child will cover in mathematics over the year. We follow the White Rose programme of study. The White Rose weekly overview in outlined below for each year group. Please note that this is a suggested overview and may be adapted by the class teacher as necessary.

Links that can be made to the EYFS Early Learning Goals

The National Curriculum programme of study begins in Year One. It is important that we support the children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception) to be as prepared as possible whilst ensuring that they are focusing on their Early learning Goals.
