Design and Technology
Curriculum Intent
In line with the National Curriculum and our school curriculum intent, at Blackwell Primary School we believe Design and Technology provides opportunities for learners to create functional products, take risks and become resourceful whilst drawing on subject knowledge and disciplines such as Maths, Science, Art and Computing. It can help learners to make sense of the world around them and enables them to develop knowledge and skills which are interconnected and transferable.
Design and Technology makes a unique contribution to children’s learning through the following key elements; explore, design, make and evaluate alongside building the development of technical knowledge. Design and Technology develops technical skills, knowledge and vocabulary by providing a range of experiences, opportunities and contexts for learners to develop their personal and social understanding, including the needs of others. It enables children to demonstrate the core values and support each other, and through positive questioning, learn to self-evaluate.
From The National Curriculum in England – framework document 2013 Purpose of study
“Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.”
