Our intent and ambition for our curriculum is that it is designed to meet, at a minimum, the requirements of the National Curriculum and enables increasing proportions of learners to progress well in all year groups across all subjects and attain at least ARE combined in reading, writing and maths by the end of KS2.

Learners will receive a broad and balanced offer that recognises the importance of reading, writing and maths and progressively builds and deepens knowledge, understanding and skills across the curriculum. The offer includes a defined entitlement that engages children through enriched experiences via the taught curriculum and all other planned activities in school.

We aim to develop independent, life-long learners who are curious about the world they live in.  We live by the Core Values of Compassion, Courage, Respect and Responsibility; these drive our behaviours and attitudes ensuring children leave our school as well-rounded individuals.

Our approach is underpinned by our understanding of the Four Modes of learning that set out clearly how different types of learning- Foundational & Conceptual and ways of learning – Personal and Collaborative – require learning tasks to be planned for, organised and delivered differently and assessed differently too.

This means that we embrace both carefully sequenced discrete and thematic learning so that skills and knowledge learned are interconnected and transferrable.  We use a variety of teaching approaches appropriate to the needs of the children.

At Blackwell Primary, we recognise the importance of tailoring our curriculum to the needs of the learners and families in our school community.  We therefore build from our learner’s starting points and ensure there is a focus on:

• Vocabulary broadening and enrichment
• Intentionally planned opportunities to learn outside
• Continuous intentionally planned personal and social development throughout their primary years
• Opportunities to have a voice and be involved in decision making
• A wide range of experiences
• Active learning
• To see their own progress
• Involvement from their parent/ carers
