Curriculum Intent
We believe at Blackwell Primary School that Art & Design is a subject that helps us to understand and give meaning to the world in which we live. It stimulates creativity and imagination; providing our learners with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas.
Art & Design provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.
Through our Art & Design curriculum, we aim to provide learners with an experience that is exciting and to ensure that our learners combine practical skills with creative thinking, developing highly valuable and transferrable skills for future careers and life. We encourage children to explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers.
As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design. They should also know how Art and Design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to culture, creativity and the wealth of our nation.
Aims
The national curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

“Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.”
